Chiesa della Madonna della Mellea
An important and characteristic church in Bossolasco is the country church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary called Madonna della Mellea in the locality of the same name on the Alba-Murazzano road.
It is a late Baroque building rebuilt by the Bossolaschesi after the mid-1600s to thank God for having been spared the plague epidemic. This church has also undergone numerous renovations over the centuries and the whole is the result of later additions, as shown by the different connotation of the interior vaults.
The scenic sanctuary has a distinctive façade with two rows of pilasters and a porticoed pronaos, enriched by two columns of a giant order supporting the triangular projecting gable in the central part. The bell tower was built after the church, with pilaster strips and arches at the level of the belfry, as shown by a council resolution of 1786 declaring the desire to have the bell tower built at the sanctuary of the Virgin Mary as she was very popular and loved by the community.
The interior of the church is characterised by a single nave, a deep presbytery, a semicircular apse and a vaulted roof. The interior decorations were redone in the 1970s in the style of the existing ones; during the same period, the floors were redone and the original altar was demolished. In the apsidal niche is a beautiful marble statue of the Virgin Mary.
